Decathlon UK Joins Forces with Macmillan’s Mighty Hikes to Make a Lasting Impact

  • Decathlon will donate 15% to Macmillan for every product purchased online from its dedicated Mighty Hikes ‘Kit List
  • Support to be given to charity at every step of the event process from participant sign-up to pop-up stores for last-minute gear purchases
  • Decathlon customers can help fund the charity’s vital services as the number of people living with cancer in the UK surges to almost 3.5 million

Decathlon has announced a new partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to offer specialist products to Mighty Hikes participants which will help them have an even more enjoyable experience and to help fund Macmillan’s vital range of support services for people living with cancer.

The Mighty Hikes are a series of one-day half and full marathon fundraising hikes set against the backdrop of some of the UK’s most beautiful landscapes. They provide participants with a unique opportunity to connect with nature and celebrate loved ones - all whilst helping make a difference for the almost 3.5 million people now living with cancer in the UK.

Decathlon has over 40 stores near to many of the Mighty Hikes and will donate a minimum of 15% of every online purchase from its dedicated ‘Kit List’ for Mighty Hikers to help make a positive difference to people living with cancer.

The kit list features a variety of apparel including waterproof jackets, breathable t-shirts, and durable walking shoes designed for comfort and to withstand various weather conditions. It also includes essential hiking gear such as poles, backpacks, water bottles and more - providing hikers with everything they need to prepare for their adventures.

This year, Macmillan Mighty Hikes will be taking place in 12 locations across all four UK nations, with Decathlon committing to opening a pop-up store at three events to provide last-minute hiking essentials for anyone that may have forgotten their gear and much-needed nutrition to keep energy levels high.

The partnership reflects a shared ambition to inspire people to live healthier lives; while contributing to the vital work of Macmillan to do whatever it takes to help everyone living with cancer across the UK get the support they need right now.

Ben Ryan, Affiliates Manager, at Decathlon, said: “Partnering with Macmillan’s Mighty Hikes aligns perfectly with our mission to make outdoor adventures both accessible and meaningful. Our role in these walks goes far beyond just providing the kit people need to take part, and we hope that the 15% donations from our Kit List and support throughout the year will benefit those directly affected by cancer.”
Craig Fordham, Director of Public Fundraising, at Macmillan Cancer Support, says: We’re thrilled to have Decathlon join us as an official partner of Macmillan Mighty Hikes and couldn’t be more grateful for its support this year. I’m sure our incredible hikers will take advantage of the kit list and be grateful for those last-minute essentials ahead of the big day.

The hikes are a fantastic way to take on a physical and mental challenge, whilst enjoying some of the UK’s most beautiful scenery, and raising vital funds. Every penny raised helps us go the extra mile to do whatever it takes for people living with cancer, whoever and wherever they are.

Last year, 24,000 people walked over 438,000 miles between them to raise £10.7 million as part of the Mighty Hikes series, all with their own reasons for taking part.

Stephanie Deacon-Clow, from West Yorkshire completed the Lake District Mighty Hike with her teenage son Noah, having decided to fundraise for Macmillan in memory of her Mum and Noah’s Nana, Beverley.

“We lost my beautiful mum to oesophageal cancer in 2020, and I wanted to do something for Macmillan to give back. Everyone should have access to the support my mum had. The Macmillan nurses were so great with her, both at the hospital and supporting her to pass away at home with her family by her side, that meant so much to us.

The Lake District is a special place to me, and I absolutely loved doing the Mighty Hike there - the views were simply breathtaking. The last three miles were hard and felt much longer, but Noah kept me going to the finish line. I would definitely do it again. The day was really well organised, everyone had their own motivation for being there, and it felt like the perfect way to remember mum and raise vital funds for Macmillan.”
